Preparation

  • Every journey requires preparation.

  • Preparation determines how well we handle what comes our way.

  • There is power in preparation—not just for trips, but for everyday life.

Jesus Prepared Before Ministry

  • Before Jesus performed miracles or preached publicly, He prepared.

  • Luke 4 shows Jesus spending 40 days in the wilderness.

  • Preparation often comes before purpose.

  • Being led by the Spirit sometimes leads us into difficult places.

Reflection

Are you being led by the Spirit or by the flesh?

  • The Spirit leads toward obedience.

  • The flesh pulls toward self-centered desires.

  • Every believer faces this daily choice.

Satan's Three Attacks on Jesus

1. Hunger (Flesh)

  • Satan attacked Jesus' physical desires.

  • He often begins with legitimate needs but offers sinful solutions.

2. Pride

  • Pride causes us to seek recognition, possessions, and status.

  • Ministry success can become a temptation if pride replaces humility.

3. Identity

  • Satan questioned Jesus' identity.

  • He still attacks believers the same way today. Don't believe the lies—remember who you are in Christ.

Encouragement from Hebrews

  • Jesus understands temptation because He experienced it.

  • He remained without sin.

  • Because He overcame temptation, He can help us overcome ours.

Three Practical Ways to Be Prepared

1. Prayer and Fasting

Preparation begins in God's presence.

  • Prayer strengthens us spiritually.

  • Fasting teaches dependence on God. Fasting isn't about impressing others. Don't fast to earn God's favor. Fast because you desire God more than earthly comforts.

Key thought:

God isn't your second option—He's your first priority.

2. Stay Rooted in God's Word

Jesus repeatedly answered temptation with Scripture.

  • Know God's truth before you need it.

  • Podcasts, worship music, and sermons are valuable...but they should never replace Scripture.

  • The deeper your roots go, the stronger you'll stand.

  • Every question you have can be answered by knowing God's Word.

Key thought:

Know the truth so you won't believe the counterfeit.

3. Know Your Identity in Christ

If you've trusted Christ:

  • You're a son or daughter of God.

  • You are a new creation.

  • You are no longer defined by your past and your old life no longer determines your future.

Satan wants believers to:

  • Question who they are.

  • Feel condemned.

  • Believe they're too far gone.

Jesus reminds us:

  • Be born again.

  • Walk in the Spirit.

  • Live from your new identity.

Key Takeaways

  • Preparation always comes before purpose.

  • The Spirit prepares us for the battles ahead.

  • Satan's methods haven't changed.

  • Jesus modeled how to overcome temptation through dependence on the Father and Scripture.

  • Spiritual preparation is a daily discipline, not a one-time event.

  • The strongest believers continually:

    • Pray and fast.

    • Stay rooted in God's Word.

    • Live confidently from their identity in Christ.

  • Victory over temptation begins long before the temptation arrives.

Questions for reflection

  • If someone watched the way I live this week, would they say I am being led more by the Spirit or by my flesh?

  • What is God inviting me to surrender today so I can be more prepared for what He has ahead?

  • Which of the three practices—prayer and fasting, staying rooted in Scripture, or knowing my identity in Christ—needs the most attention in my life right now?
