Scriptures used: Genesis 25:21-34; 27:20, 33, 36; Genesis 28:10-22; Hebrews 11:20; 12:16-17; John 1:45-51
Passages referenced: Genesis 23-28; James 1:1-18

  • Where there is division there is the potential for destruction.

  • We can’t just hate sins consequences, we need to hate sin.

  • Regret can’t reverse past decisions. Only the grace of God can cover our past.

  • Warning signs you may be trying to create God's will rather than follow God's will:

    • When you find yourself acting out of haste for what you want more than you are pausing to seek God.

    • When you find yourself acting out of deception, compromise and secrecy.

    • When you find yourself surrounded by mistrust and misplaced priorities.

  • When we’re trying to make things happen outside of God we will be more focused on the practicality of things and the penalties to avoid, than we are the principles behind what we are doing.

  • Sometimes the place we want to be is hindering us from being where we need to be to hear from God.

  • We are often looking for a blessing that works for us, where God is looking to give us a blessing that works through us.

Reflect or meet with someone to discuss:

  • Do the actions of Isaac, Rebekah, Esau and Jacob in the account of Jacob getting the birthright and the blessing surprise you?

  • How do you see modern family dynamics represented in Isaac and Rebekah's family? What can we learn from their situation?

  • What kind of warning signs do you typically begin to notice when you are trying to create God's will instead of following God's will?

Hebrews 11 highlights many of the heroes of the Bible, including Jacob. The deeper you dig into Jacob's life, you begin to see that he’s a mess. But what if the people in the Bible aren't just heroes to imitate, but people to walk with on their own journey of faith? Let’s walk through the life of Jacob, and see his life transformed by the grace of God.
