Flourish Week 3

Notes for the November 1, 2026 message:

Scriptures used: Psalm 23:1-3; 62:1,5; Isaiah 40:31; Matthew 11:28-30; Romans 12:2
Scriptures referenced: Genesis 2:1-3; Psalm 121, 127; Mark 1:35; 6:31; Luke 12:27; 15:20

Flourishing begins with resting in God, not striving in our own strength.

Just as taking a deep breath can calm our bodies and minds, we all need moments to pause, slow down, and reset. God designed us to need rest, not to run endlessly like machines.

  • Rest is part of God's design. God rested on the seventh day, not because He needed to recover, but to establish an example for us to follow.

  • Rest helps us flourish. Just as flowers grow and bloom without striving to provide for themselves, we flourish when we rely on God and allow Him to work in, on, and through us.

  • We cannot force recovery. We must create space for rest because our bodies, minds, and spirits need time to renew. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is stop doing and simply be.

  • Rest requires releasing control. We often try to keep everything moving through our own efforts. But sometimes we need to slow down, do less, and trust God to take care of what we cannot control.

  • Rest is found in God's presence. Like a loving father welcoming his child into his arms, God invites us to come to Him for safety, peace, and renewal. We can run to the Father because He welcomes us with open arms like the father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

  • Rest is not laziness. God has called us to live with purpose and serve others, but we must learn to balance our work with trusting Him. Even Jesus took time away to pray and rest.

  • Make time for God daily. Start small. Listen to a couple of worship songs and read your Bible for 15 minutes. These moments are more than another task to complete; they are opportunities to rest in the Father's presence.

Rest begins when we recognize that we are not in control of everything—and we don't have to be. We can work faithfully while trusting God with the results.

The Bottom Line

We flourish not by striving harder in our own strength, but by resting in God's presence and trusting Him to work in, through, and around us.

Personal Application & Reflection

Am I allowing myself to rest in God, or am I constantly striving to make everything happen in my own strength?

This week, be more intentional about slowing down, creating space for God, and letting go of the pressure to always be doing something productive. That may mean taking a deep breath, spending time in worship, reading Scripture, enjoying the simple moments with family, or simply sitting quietly in God's presence.
